- : GREETINGS to all and the newcomers to this list. We'd like
to introduce ourselves. George and Rita Williams founded this
ministry. We were Mormons (Temple Mormons) for 20 years. We prayed
to God in 1992 to allow us to do a ministry speaking out against
Scientology. Six months later God led us to the truth: out of
the cult of Mormonism. We did not know at the time we were in
a cult. No-one had witnessed to us in 20 years. [George passed
away to heaven in March 2003 and Nicholas Stivers joined the
ministry as Vice President.]
- The Holy Spirit brought us to information about all the cults
and the present development of the New World Order. We began
bringing our research to you. Because all the research was already
done, we decided to build a library within Cephas Ministry. Our
newsletters are not designed to provoke
anger or resistance to evil which is strictly prohibited in Scripture.
It is to shed light on activities by those who would deceive
the elect by devious methods and systematic plans.
- We are Bible students and have left all worldly organizations.
- The focus of these newsletters is to prove why we had
to leave the world system. We are called 'Watchmen on the
Wall' which God always had during the Old / New Testament Times.
- To understand what is happening, one has to know the Bible
to compare notes.
- The first section is about the church.
The news about churches is unedited unless indicated by Ednotes.
The church as we knew it, is undergoing disintegration. This
began on a fast track in the early nineteen sixties when the
Catholic Church produced liberal Vatican II to replace Vatican
I.
- The trend since then has been ecumenical which is truly what
the word 'Catholicism' means: a universal religion all
inclusive and multicultural. The Bible calls for a final church
which doesn't resemble what Jesus taught. The Word of God has
undergone many changes to fit the present mode. The Bible calls
for a falling away from the truth before Jesus
comes back for His Bride, the true believers called 'Ekklesia.'
Our newsletters prove this fact and prove that the Bible is true
from beginning to end.
- The second section is about globalism
where we bring your attention to the social, political and global
trend, so called democratizing what is left. One third of the
world still remains to be taken over. It again proves that we
are moving to closure of the times of the Gentiles prophesied
in the Bible.
- The third section compliments End Time
teachings with what is happening in Israel. We describe and watch
for signs of the coming Tribulation to confirm that we are moving
into that space and time.
- Watchmen on the wall do not solicit memberships. We have
an email group that gets information when we upload new information
and a newsletter whenever it is possible time wise. We love the
Lord with all our hearts and minds and we love all people God
has created but especially those who love our Lord and Savior,

April 9 2005 - PROPOSED "ROAD MAP"
On March 24 /05 Eliazar (a dear believing friend) called me from
his cell phone. He was on his way back to Jerusalem from Ashdod.
He called and said "Simantov you would not believe what
I am looking at here on the Highway coming out of Ashdod. There
is a convoy of American jeeps and military equipment that is
miles long. Coming into Israel." What is going on? My immediate
thought and answer was Eli, they are preparing for a war most
people in the world do not know is being planed. There is no
question G.W. Bush along with many other entities have been planning
and working on the division of Israel. They have called it "The
Road Map". B
- ut all indicators are that this "Road Map" is only
part of a plan of globalization. And the US government are bringing
in troops that will in-fact enforce its implementation. This
second such entry of foreign troops into Israel is quite frightening,
especially since the Israeli public have not been told about
this invasion of our land by foreign troops. Following is the
report from David who witnessed this same invasion yesterday.
God knows how many others have entered, and when their activities
will begin. Ariel Sharon leaves for a visit to G.W. Bush in Texas
on April 11/05. What will in-fact be the theme of their discussions?
I personally believe that both Mr. Bush president of the United
States and Ariel Sharon are planning something evil, and to the
detriment of Israel and the worlds peace.
- RED ALERT! AMERICAN COMBAT TROOPS IN NOW IN ISRAEL
By David 8 April 2005 - As a daily reader and a rare contributor
of the Fivedoves, I felt an obligation and duty to tell you about
a FIRST HAND experience of an incident that occurred yesterday
here in Eretz Israel. This is not a "word of mouth story"
or a grapevine rumor; we actually saw this - not 10 feet away
from our own eyes. We were out in the Negev desert and as we
approached the mountain pass to the Wilderness of Zin, I noticed
what I first thought was "a very long and bright green snake"
winding its way down another mountain road. By the time that
we arrived at the junction this "long green snake"
had become a huge combat army convoy that was passing in front
of our eyes not more than 10 feet away.
At first I marveled at the bright flashy new uniforms of the
soldiers, their brand new weapons and huge brand new transport
humvees all in new bright green forest camouflage that filed
past us at the junction. Mile after mile they slowly inched past
us. Nobody could enter the highway because of his or her multitude.
Then I began to think, hey, what's going on?
- We Israeli's, don't have flashy new equipment or uniforms
for our army and we cannot afford all the latest gadgets of war.
Then at closer scrutiny I noticed that the soldiers wore the
new "nazi" helmet of the American combat soldier. I
then noticed good ol' American boys: blacks, whites, Puerto Ricans,
sitting in the humvees. I then looked at the nametags on the
trucks and humvees and sure enough they were IDF (Israel Defense
Force) numbers and letters. Ocasionally an IDF jeep would pass
us in the convoy; older sand camouflage vehicles with real Israeli
soldiers in the jeeps.
In other words this convoy was trying to hide its real identity,
but stuck out like the proverbial sore thumb. This convoy contained
an enormous number of American soldiers and was carrying a very
heavy load and stretched for many miles across the desert. They
had no American Identity to the equipment, no American symbols
or names or emblems. Maybe they are here to help with the disengagement,
we don't know.
We have even heard rumors that German policemen with war-horses
(what a horrific irony if this is true) would be employed to
help remove the Jew from their homes. Pray for our tiny country
here, we are in the middle of a spiritual battle to actually
lose the Jewish homeland if Almighty God of our fathers does
not intervene.
- We have lost Gaza and Gush Katif, we have lost Judea and
the Galilee, we are losing the Negev and now it looks like all
of the Eastern Jerusalem is being planned to be returned to the
Arabs. We are now surrounded by enemies. I think of the Psalm
3 of King David that even if we are surrounded by 10,000 of the
enemy we will not be afraid, because God is with us. WE all know
the glorious end!

- REFLECTING ON THE POPE'S FUNERAL
- [Ednote: Many are asking why the color red was so pronounced
during the Pope's funeral? The commentator at the funeral stated
that Roman Emperors had given permission to the Vatican for the
Popes to count themselves among Royal Kings. Red is a sign of
dignity. 165 nations were represented among them 65 royal dignitaries.
Cardinal John Ratzenberger temporarily took the Pope's position
performing the rituals. He made interesting statements: "Mother
of God will guide you [Pope John Paul II] now to eternal glory."
He addressed the Blessed Virgin Mary OUR SAVIOR, SAVIOR OF ROME,
SAVIOR OF OUR PEOPLE... Benny Hinn is on his way to Rome to do
a special for the 700 Club. Paul Crouch showed a clip of his
meeting with the Pope. He stated that he has a station right
above the Pope's apartment. What was interesting in the clip
was the fact that he tried to make us believe that there was
little to no relationship to the Pope. Paul has a Catholic on
his staff. On the clip the Pope was traveling in his pope-mobile
through a vast crowd and for some strange reason stopped and
got out of his pope-mobile right where Paul Crouch was located
and got out to shake hands. WHAT A COINCIDENCE. Endofnote]

Clinton, we can see that the Zoroastrian Tradition was observed

- LDS CHURCH TO APPEAL DEAD GOAT RULING
The LDS Church plans to appeal a judge's ruling that said Salt
Lake Salt Lake Tribune, April 1, 2005 - City was right to allow
a strip club to open downtown near church property.
"We respectfully disagree with some of the court's ruling,"
said Alan Sullivan, the church's attorney on this case. "We
continue to believe that the operation of a sexually oriented
business at that location is unlawful."
The church can't appeal to the Utah Supreme Court until the full
case is resolved. The lower court hasn't decided if the Crazy
Goat Saloon, 165 S. West Temple, is a nuisance as the church
says. Third District Judge Denise Lindberg ruled Wednesday against

- KORAN SCHOLAR: US WILL CEASE TO EXIST IN 2007
- The Jerusalem Post, Israel - March 29, 2005 - Khaled Abu
Toameh - A thorough analysis of the Koran reveals that the US
will cease to exist in the year 2007, according to research published
by Palestinian scholar Ziad Silwadi.
- The study, which has caught the attention of millions of
Muslims worldwide, is based on in-depth interpretations of various
verses in the Koran. It predicts that the US will be hit by a
tsunami larger than that which recently struck southeast Asia.
- "The tsunami waves are a minor rehearsal in comparison
with what awaits the US in 2007," the researcher concluded
in his study. "The Holy Koran warns against the Omnipotent
Allah's force. A great sin will cause a huge flood in the Atlantic
and Pacific oceans."
- Silwadi, who is from the village of Silwad near Ramallah
– the home of Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal – is not
a world-renowned scholar. He said he decided to publish the findings
of his research "out of a sense of responsibility because
what is about to happen is extremely shocking and frightening."
- His fear, he said, is that the world economy, which relies
heavily on the US dollar, would be deeply affected by the collapse
of the US.
- "It would be fair to say that the world would be better
off with a US that is not a superpower and that does not take
advantage of weak nations than a world where this country does
not exist at all," he added."The world will certainly
lose a lot if and when this disaster occurs because of the great
services that American society has rendered to the economy, industry
and science."

- UTHMAN AND THE RECENSION OF THE KORAN
- Answering Islam, by Leone Caetani, UK - THE KORAN WAS NOT
COLLECTED during the Prophet's lifetime; this is clearly stated
by good authorities. Those who are enumerated as collectors can
certainly have collected only a part, for otherwise there is
no explanation of the great pains to which the three caliphs,
Abu Bakr, 'Umar and 'Uthman, put themselves after Muhammad's
death to produce the single official text of the Prophet's revelations.
- The tradition of the first compilation in the reign of Abu
Bakr is usually accepted without questioning, but an examination
of the account quickly betrays certain contradictions. Thus,
if the death of so many Muslims at al-Yamamah endangered the
preservation of the text, why did Abu Bakr, after making his
copy, practically conceal it, entrusting it to the guardianship
of a woman? Hafsah's copy seems, in fact, to be an invention
to justify the corrections of that subsequently compiled under
'Uthman. I allow, however, the probability that in the time of
Abu Bakr and 'Umar, quite independently of the battle of al-Yamamah,
a copy of the Koran was prepared at Medina, perhaps at 'Umar's
suggestion, exactly as others were compiled in the provinces,
those, namely, which were afterwards destroyed by order of 'Uthman.
It may be that the copy in Medina had a better guarantee of authenticity;
while the statement that in the text prepared by Abu Bakr and
'Umar no verse was accepted which was not authenticated by at
least two witnesses, who declared that they had themselves heard
it from the Prophet, leads us to suppose that already in the
first Koranic compilation other verses were suppressed which
had not the required support.
- If this statement can be accepted as authentic, it would
indicate - as is perfectly natural and possible - that even while
Muhammad lived, or at least immediately after his death, there
were in circulation verses either apocryphal or erroneously attributed
to the Prophet. It seems to me equally likely that in the texts
made in the provinces (those, that is to say, that were destroyed
by 'Uthman) there should have crept in apocryphal or insufficiently
authenticated verses, or others which the Prophet and his most
interested friends and Companions did not want to see preserved.
Muslim traditionists for obvious reasons have tried to eliminate
every kind of suspicion in this direction, for that would open
an enormous field for dangerous insinuations and conjectures
in countries so fertile in invention as the East... These general
observations, however do not touch on the political and moral
aspect of the official compilation of the Koran under 'Uthman.
In point of fact; this act, though apparently of a purely religious
nature, was intimately bound up with matters of the highest importance
in the history of Islam. To explain how this can be, we must
first examine the origin and position of a new class of the Islamic

- THE TURKISH GAP PROJECT AND BIBLE PROPHECY
- A system of 22 dams on the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, has
provoked criticism from downstream neighbours Iraq and Syria
and this is what will dry up the Euphrates.... On the negative
side of the equation, the building of dams and restriction of
water flow of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers is fueling unrest
and threats from several of Turkey's neighbors. Currently, Syria
is strongly protesting the curtailment of Euphrates water and
is making threats. Further to the east, Iraq is expressing concerns
about water shortages due to GAP development and uses of water
from the Tigris. Iraq is also feeling the effects of downstream
water loss from the Euphrates. Turkey is just beginning to acknowledge
these protests over water loss. The majority of infrastructure
financing for GAP came through the World Bank. The cries of Syria
and Iraq concerning water loss due to the GAP project is being
heard not only by World Bank, but also by other governments in
the Middle East and Europe. Should DSI not make some substantial
efforts to curtail the wasteful irrigation practices and needless
water loss in the GAP, world opinion will solidify against Turkey
and further World Bank participation in Turkey could be threatened.

- WHAT IS INTERSPIRITUALITY?

- While the majority of Christendom has been seduced and mesmerized
by Purpose-Driven, mysticism, the emerging church and a watered-down
gospel, interspirituality is on the move. Evangelical leaders
as well as New Age gurus and other religious leaders across the
world are joining in this effort to find common ground, thus
they hope, peace and unity.
- Wayne Teasdale, a monk who coined the term interspirituality,
said, "[I]nterspirituality: a crossing-over boundaries that
mysticism makes possible and concrete. The spiritual common ground
which exists among the world's religions will be identified,
and its theological implications suggested." In other words,
mysticism (i.e. contemplative prayer) is the common element that
unites all religions. According to Teasdale, who believed truth
and God could be found outside of the Christian faith, that it
is the bridge which unites all.
- Tony Campolo, a leading evangelical author and speaker says
in his book, Speaking My Mind: "[M]ysticism [contemplative
prayer]provides some hope for common ground between Christianity
and Islam."—
And we mustn't forget the words of Tilden Edwards, founder of
the very contemplative Shalem Institute for Spiritual Formation
who said contemplative prayer is the bridge between Christianity
and Far Eastern religions.
- Why do these men say this? Do they know something that many
others don't? Yes, they do. They know that going into the silence,
into the altered state of consciousness takes the practitioner
into a spiritual realm. They believe this realm is God, Divinity.
And they believe anyone can enter this realm.That is why Campolo
said mysticism is the link between Christianity and Islam. He
believes the same God is reached.
- While the push for interspirituality grows at alarming speeds
throughout the world, born-again believers are going to be pushed
outside of the organized evangelical church and considered to
be the main obstacle from bringing the world into unity and peace.
It's happened before in history, and it appears to be happening
again.

- HATRED LAW NEEDS OVERHAUL - CHURCHES
The Age, Australia - Mar. 31, 2005 - Barney Swartz, Religion
Editor - Worried about curbs on free speech, religious leaders
will push Premier Steve Bracks for change. Victoria's church
leaders will tell Premier Steve Bracks it is time to change the
controversial religious hatred law. All agree it is unsatisfactory,
but they differ on what needs changing. The leaders of the main
denominations discussed the Racial and Religious Tolerance Act
last week, and were due to meet Mr Bracks today. But the meeting
was postponed until next week because of today's funeral of former
governor Davis McCaughey. Anglican Archbishop Peter Watson has
said the church did not look closely enough at the legislation
when it was framed in 2001, and it did not want "the law
of the land intruding into places where it has no proper role".
- Writing in the diocesan newspaper, Archbishop Watson said
churches should have examined more closely whether the act was
an unnecessary curb on free speech. The judgment in December
that a conservative Christian group, Catch The Fire, had vilified
Muslims under the act brought the question into sharper focus.
The Catholic and Uniting churches supported Muslims against Catch
the Fire. He said Christians in Australia were used to ridicule
and criticism, which could be healthy. Some faiths, less used
to liberal society, might find comments about their faith offensive.
"Not everything that is offensive or upsetting to us should
be outlawed," he said.
- Presbyterian moderator Allan Harman, who with Archbishop
Watson has led the opposition, said yesterday: "Our attitude
is against the bill altogether. It mixes racial and religious
vilification, and they are not the same."
- Catholic Archbishop Denis Hart said the act tended to blur
race and religion. "The nuancing isn't there. We want to
allow robust dialogue by adherents of particular religions, but
not in a way that gathers up race or is unjust or stereotypes,"
he said. Uniting Church moderator Sue Gormann said that by the
end of their meeting the state heads of churches were in agreement.
"We agreed... to look at whether this legislation is doing
its job. It's clear that in some cases it may not be," she
said. "The point is not to stop freedom of speech but to
ensure safety. We are open to amendments." Maureen Postma,
secretary of the Victorian Council of Churches, said some churches
were against the legislation and others were less convinced.
"Not too many of those jumping up and down are actually

- FATIMA: JOHN PAUL II, ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH CONTRADICT THE
GOSPEL
- Where do Evangelical ECT signatories now stand? by Richard
Bennett - The fanfare of Jubilee Year 2000 continued when on
May 13th Pope John Paul II gave his homily at the occasion of
the beatification ceremony for Francisco and Jacinta Marto at
Fatima, Portugal. (For those unfamiliar with Fatima, in 1917,
a vision claiming to be Mary appeared to three shepherd children
in Fatima, Portugal.) What John Paul II has done, perhaps inadvertently,
through his homily is to cause two very significant issues to
rise to the surface regarding “Marian devotion”: first,
the apparition’s message concerning salvation, and second,
how the Pope has explained the same message.
- His homily is fully in line with the Congregation for the
Doctrine of the Faith (formerly the Office of the Inquisition),
the RCC’s official department whose “orientation is...in
the condemnation of error...[and] in the promotion of orthodox
doctrine.” That department states that the message of Fatima
“with its urgent call to conversion and penance, draws us
to the heart of the Gospel.”
- "Mary" ready to lead them safely to God - Prefacing
his remarks on the Fatima visions by citing Matthew 11:25, that
God “was pleased to reveal the kingdom to the merest children”,
the Pope without comment reviewed briefly the history of the
visions, “According to the divine plan, ‘a woman clothed
with the sun’ (Rev. 12:1) came down from heaven to this
earth to visit the privileged children....She asks them to offer
themselves as victims of reparation, saying that she was ready
to lead them safely to God. And behold, they see a light shining
from her maternal hands which penetrates them inwardly, so that
they feel immersed in God...” - In Scripture “the God
of all grace” seeks, finds, and saves His people. The good
news is stated in Romans 3:24, “being justified freely by
his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.”
This is the pure free grace of God showing, as it were, the very
heart of God. Salvation is God’s demonstration of His own
righteousness in the faithfulness of Jesus Christ in His perfect
life and sacrificial death. It is God’s act alone and not
that of any woman “ready to lead them safely to God”.
John Paul’s blasphemous words, however, are in total accord
with the Catechism of the Catholic Church (1994) that says,
- This motherhood of Mary in the order of grace continues uninterruptedly...until
the eternal fulfillment of all the elect. Taken up to heaven
she did not lay aside this saving office but by her manifold
intercession continues to bring us the gifts of eternal salvation.”

- The Church of England Newspaper (UK), Dec. 3, 2004 - Religious
leaders are hoping that their call for mutual respect between
Muslims and Christians will increase tolerance as tension between
the faithful, especially in Iraq, is undergoing “considerable
escalation.” The recent targeting of churches in Iraq by
pamphleteers commanding them to convert to Islam or leave was
cited as one of many examples of how the religious intolerance
in Iraq is “getting worse,” according to Canon Andrew
White of the Iraqi Centre for Dialogue, Reconciliation and Peace.
Individual Christians and churches in Mosul and Baghdad were
picked out by followers of an Iraqi militant group during a mass
leaflet distribution effort two weeks ago, according to Canon
White.
- “The leaflets stated that Christians must convert to
Islam, leave Iraq, or face the consequences,” he said this
week, speaking from Jerusalem. The plea for interfaith unity,
made last weekend during a conference in Tripoli, comes at a
time when around 10 per cent of Iraq's estimated 800,000 Christians
have already fled the country, according to the Washington Times.
In a recent report on an Iraqi congregation the Rev Saad Hanna,
a priest at Mary Jacob Church in the Dora section of Baghdad,
told the Washington Times the departure of “terrified”
Christians has drained the church of two-thirds of their parishioners.

desperate,” Canon White said, adding that security guards

a recession and it would be his greatest challenge!
- In roughly 34 days, America went from riches to rags. Amazing!
But, the signs of an economy in trouble were already there during
the Clinton administration and the stress began to emerge: On
December 5, 2000, Montgomery Wards, after 75 years in business,
announced they would close their doors forever, shutting down
250 stores and 10 distribution centers nationwide. This doesn't
happen overnight to a big company like Wards, it takes years.
On January 5, 2001 Sears Roebuck announced the closing of 89
stores.

- MYSTERY CLOTHING COMPANY PLANS ITEM-LEVEL RFID ROLLOUT
An unnamed national company plans to tag all of its clothing
items with radio frequency identification (RFID) tracking devices
in 2005, according to Checkpoint representatives at last week's
Frontline Expo 2004 trade show in Chicago.
- Checkpoint is the leader in electronic theft prevention tags
and has recently begun encouraging its clients to incorporate
RFID in their tagging programs. Could the mystery brand be Calvin
Klein, Champion, or Abercrombie & Fitch? Representatives
from Checkpoint wouldn't say, but based on what we saw, any one
of these companies could be toying with the idea. CASPIAN (Consumers
Against Supermarket Privacy Invasion and Numbering) obtained
clear shots of prototype RFID clothing tags bearing these companies'
logos.
"While Checkpoint didn't reveal the company name, representatives
did refer to the company as a ‘well-known national retailer.'
That was one clue," said Katherine Albrecht, Founder and
Director of CASPIAN. Another clue could be the two prototype
dark blue hang tags that "screamed for attention,"
according to Albrecht. Albrecht revealed photos that show how
Checkpoint attempted to obscure the company brand name on two
blue hang tags at their display. Checkpoint representatives reported
that the tags contained EPC-compliant RFID chips.
- "The manner in which Checkpoint concealed the name leads
us to question whether the tape was there to hide the brand name
or create drama around the tags," says Albrecht. "Researchers
at CASPIAN are pretty good at sniffing out the industry's dirty
little secrets, but this was pretty much handed to us on a silver
platter. Checkpoint failed to cover over the Abercrombie &
Fitch collegiate logo at the end of the tags."
- Additional evidence suggesting that Abercrombie & Fitch
could be the mystery company comes from a May 18, 2004 Women's
Wear Daily article titled "Abercrombie to Give RFID a Try."
The article cited statements made by an Abercrombie & Fitch
executive at a retail conference earlier this year where he described
a new store format that "would be the first in the [Abercrombie
& Fitch] group to use RFID at the item level." CASPIAN's
Albrecht characterizes any plans by Abercrombie & Fitch to
roll out item-level RFID tagging as ill-advised. "They're
still reeling from boycotts over their marketing practices. It
would be a PR disaster for them to further antagonize the public."
- Ongoing boycotts of the company were launched by Christian
and family oriented organizations, including Focus on the Family,
in response to Abercrombie & Fitch's sexually explicit marketing
materials. These materials have glorified teen nudity and group
sex. Albrecht offers this parting advice to companies like Abercrombie
& Fitch, Calvin Klein, Champion and any other companies considering
item-level RFID tagging: "Don't do it. Study what happened
to Benetton before taking advice from RFID proponents like Checkpoint.
It can be hard to win back customer trust once you've crossed

- WHAT DOES ALAN GREENSPAN WANT?
- New York Times - February 18, 2005 - It was inevitable that
Alan Greenspan would make news when he testified before the Senate
Banking Committee on Wednesday that he supported private accounts
in Social Security. "So if you're going to move to private
accounts, which I approve of," he said, "I think you
have to do it in a cautious, gradual way." ..
- He said repeatedly that the crucial underlying problem for
the United States economy was a lack of national savings.. Mr.
Greenspan also stressed the importance of closing Social Security's
long-term funding gap - an estimated $3.7 trillion hole that
will develop over 75 years, the usual span of time used by Social
Security's trustees to gauge the system's soundness. Then he
pointed out that money accumulating in private accounts would
do nothing to close the long-term funding gap in Social Security.
The only way to do that is to increase taxes or cut benefits,
or to adopt some combination of the two... As the nation's top
banker, Mr. Greenspan was on surer ground when discussing the
borrowing needed to establish private accounts - an estimated
$2 trillion over 10 years, and $4.5 trillion over two decades.
He said it would be a risky thing to do... And if he wants to
keep the financial markets calm, he should disapprove of enormous
borrowing.

- SUPERMARKET GIANTS CRUSH CENTRAL AMERICAN FARMERS
New York Times by Celia W Dugger - December 28, 2004 - VALENCIA,
Guatemala - Mario Chinchilla, his face shaded by a battered straw
hat, worriedly surveyed his field of sickly tomatoes. His hands
and jeans were caked with dirt, but no amount of labor would
ever turn his puny crop into the plump, unblemished produce the
country's main supermarket chain displays in its big stores.
- For a time, the farmer's cooperative he heads managed to
sell vegetables to the chain, part owned by the giant Dutch multinational,
Ahold, which counts Stop & Shop among its assets. But the
co-op's members lacked the expertise, as well as the money to
invest in the modern greenhouses, drip irrigation and pest control
that would have helped them meet supermarket specifications.
- Squatting next to his field, Mr. Chinchilla's rugged face
was a portrait of defeat. "They wanted consistent supply
without ups and downs," he said, scratching the soil with
a stick. "We didn't have the capacity to do it."
- Across Latin America, supermarket chains partly or wholly
owned by global corporate goliaths like Ahold, Wal-Mart and Carrefour
have revolutionized food distribution in the short span of a
decade and have now begun to transform food growing, too.
- The megastores are popular with customers for their lower
prices, choice and convenience. But their sudden appearance has
brought unanticipated and daunting challenges to millions of
struggling, small farmers.
- The stark danger is that increasing numbers of them will
go bust and join streams of desperate migrants to America and
the urban slums of their own countries. Their declining fortunes,
economists and agronomists fear, could worsen inequality in a
region where the gap between rich and poor already yawns cavernously
and the concentration of land in the hands of an elite has historically
fueled cycles of rebellion and violent repression.
- "It's like being on a train with a glass on a table
and it's about to fall off and break," said Prof. Thomas
Reardon, an agricultural economist at Michigan State University.
"Everyone sees the glass on the table - but do they see
it shaking? Do they see the edge? The edge is the structural
changes in the market."
- In the 1990's supermarkets went from controlling 10 to 20
percent of the market in the region to dominating it, a transition
that took 50 years in the United States, according to researchers
at Michigan State and the Latin American Center for Rural Development
in Santiago, Chile.
- Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica and Mexico are furthest
along. While the changes have happened more slowly in poorer,
more rural Central American countries, they have begun to quicken
here, too. In Guatemala, the number of supermarkets has more
than doubled in the past decade, as the share of food they retail
has reached 35 percent.
- The hope that small farmers would benefit by banding together
in business-minded associations has not been borne out. Some
like Aj Ticonel, in the city of Chimaltenango, have succeeded.
But the evidence suggests that the failure of Mr. Chinchilla's

- SENATE PANEL REJECTS STEPPED-UP COUNTRY-OF-ORIGIN FOOD LABELING

- Appropriators approve $84 Billion for agriculture in FY05

- Washington -- The Senate Appropriations Committee has rejected
an attempt to move up the date for mandatory country-of-origin
labeling of food. The attempt to move to mandatory labeling of
meat, fruits, vegetables and other food products beginning January
1, 2005, was defeated September 14 by a 14-14 tie vote. The amendment
may be reintroduced when the appropriations bill reaches the
Senate floor, according to news reports. Labeling originally
was to begin at the end of September 2004 but was later pushed
back by Congress to September 30, 2006. The committee also approved
by voice vote an $84 billion measure to fund agriculture programs
in the fiscal year beginning October 1 (FY05)
- Midwestern ranchers want labels that tell consumers where
their food originated because of concerns about competition from
Canadian beef producers. The ranchers argue that labels could
tell consumers if their meat is from an area where bovine spongiform
encephalopathy, or mad cow disease, has been identified, news
reports say. However, meatpackers and ranchers in the Southwest
say that beef from Mexico and the United States is often mixed
in packing houses and that labeling would increase processing
costs. The funding bill would provide $16.8 billion in discretionary
funding for most U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) operations
and for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The amount is
nearly equal to that approved by the full House of Representatives
in July. The Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) would receive
$824 million, a 6 percent increase over the current funding level.
The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) would
get $792 million, a 10 percent increase.
- Earlier in September, a Senate Appropriations subcommittee
voted to relax U.S. trade restrictions with Cuba. Relaxing the
42-year trade U.S. embargo with Cuba would make it easier for
farmers and medical suppliers to obtain U.S. licenses to their
products in the Caribbean country. However, the Bush administration
opposes weakening the embargo, saying that Cuba's trade with
other countries so far has benefited the regime of Fidel Castro,

SUPREMACIST HALE SENTENCED TO 40 YEARS

CHICAGO - Avowed white supremacist Matthew Hale was sentenced
to 40 years in prison Wednesday for trying to have a federal
judge killed - the same judge whose husband and mother were murdered
five weeks ago by a deranged man who had no connection to Hale.
Hale, the 33-year-old leader of a group that preaches racial
holy war, was sentenced after a rambling, two-hour speech in
which he claimed he was the victim and even recited part of the
Star Spangled Banner. He showed no emotion and sat staring at
the defense table as the sentence was handed down. Prosecutors
argued for the maximum sentence, saying Matthew Hale's crime
amounted to an act of terrorism, and the judge agreed.
- "Mr. Hale is not concerned about taking someone's life,
but rather how to do it without getting caught," U.S. District
Judge James Moody said in imposing the sentence. "I consider
Mr. Hale to be extremely dangerous and the offense for which
he was convicted to be extremely egregious." Hale was convicted
in April 2004 of soliciting an undercover FBI informant to murder
U.S. District Judge Joan Humphrey Lefkow of Chicago in retaliation
for her ruling against him in a trademark dispute.Prosecutors
said Hale was furious that Lefkow ordered him to stop using the
World Church of the Creator name for his group. Lefkow said the
name was trademarked by an Oregon-based church group. The case
took on a higher profile after Lefkow's husband and elderly mother
were shot and killed in the Lefkow home in late February. Early
suspicion fell on Hale followers but days later a Chicago man
disgruntled over a ruling in his medical malpractice lawsuit
fatally shot himself in Wisconsin and confessed to the slayings
in a note. Hale acted as his own attorney during the sentencing,
as he had for much of the trial. He compared himself to Lefkow,
saying they were both victims. "Before you does stand a
man who not only is innocent, not only is demonstrably innocent,
but who refused to join a plot against Judge Lefkow's life,"
Hale said.
- In his rambling, arm-waving, speech to the court before the
sentencing, Hale brought up the murders, despite Moody's efforts
to stop him. "This horrible lie may have had some effect
on this scoundrel and what happened to her family," Hale
said.
- He admitted that he was "wandering a bit" but rambled
on about the case. He compared the FBI to the Gestapo, claimed
the news media smeared him, said he had been poorly represented
by his former lawyer and ended by reciting the last 17 words
of the Star Spangled Banner.
- "Before you does stand a man who not only is innocent,
not only is demonstrably innocent, but who refused to join a
plot against Judge Lefkow's life," Hale said.
- He said he never meant to encourage the murder of Lefkow.
In fact, he said, he considered Lefkow and himself to be "on
the same side against these liars."
- At one point, he turned to prosecutors and courtroom audience
and begged them: "Somebody tell her that it's a lie, somebody
tell this poor woman."
- A court officials said Lefkow stayed away from the building
Wednesday to avoid the hearing.
- Hale's parents and brother sat together in court during the
hearing.
- "I think it's absolutely horrible," Hale's mother,
Evelyn Hutcheson, said. "Matt's the only one in there telling
