Like so many drugs, Prozac is one that one is not supposed to just stop taking. In fact some say on has to take it permanently to some extent in smaller doses.
Listening to the Press Club on C-SPAN January 19, 2001, to the CEO Sidney Taurel, a representative of the Lilly Drug Company, he stated that there had been a shift in attitude to insure safe and effective drugs. In 1992 the President enacted a Modernization Act which mandates that the FDA become more effective at doing their job.
The CEO admitted that a great deal of money had been made with Prozac. It was a best seller anti depressant on the market. He stated that they will stop producing it. The patent ends in 2001. When asked if there would be a generic drug replacing Prozac, he changed the subject.
