LEST THERE BE ANY FORNICATOR, OR PROFANE PERSON,
AS ESAU, WHO FOR ONE MORSEL OF MEAT
SOLD HIS BIRTHRIGHT.
|
Ge 25:25
|
And
the first came out red, all over like an hairy garment; and they called his
name Esau. Gen 27:11
Note
to 27:1-38: Birthright relates to the order of birth. The oldest was
supposed to receive a double portion of his father’s inheritance. Esau gave
in to Jacob’s extortion and sold his birthright to Jacob. Despite Jacob’s
wickedness the father could not alter the birthright nor give it to
another. Deut 21:17 But he shall
acknowledge the son of the hated for the firstborn, by giving him a double
portion of all that he hath: for he is the beginning of his strength; the
right of the firstborn is his. Esau recognized that his father could do it
any way he saw fit. Jacob deceived and knew that it would remain in tact.
He also wanted to secure Isaac’s blessing as well. Jacob’s name means ‘one who supplants’ .
God had previously recognized Jacob to be in line first but He did not
approve of Jacob’s conduct. Jacob reaped evil consequences. He was banished
from home and lived in fear of Esau. It had an effect on his children.
Jacob eventually repented and changed and God confirmed the blessing of
Abraham on him.

And
the boys grew: and Esau was a
cunning hunter, a man of the field; and Jacob was a plain man,
dwelling in tents. Note: The strife
between Rebekah’s twin sons Jacob and Esau began before their birth and
continued throughout their lives and descendants. Jacob represents the Israelites and Esau the Edomites which
is noted throughout the O.T. (Num. 20:20,21; 2 Sam 8:13, 14; Ps 137; Joel
3:19) Edomites: Genesis 36:9 And these are the generations of Esau

Note:
on 27:39,40 The Edomites were the descendants of Esau. They inhabited a
rich fertile country which was given especially to them (Deut 2:5). Their
country was traversed by roads, though it was mountainous and rocky (Num.
20:17, Jer. 49:16). In character they are said to have been shrewd, proud
and self-confident, strong, cruel, and idolatrous (Jer. 27:3; 49:7,16,19; Ezek.
25:12; 2 Chr. 25:14, 20). They inhabited the cities of Avith, Pau, Bozrah,
and Teman and were implacable
enemies of Israel. It was forbidden to hate them and they could be
received into the congregation (Deut. 23:7, 8). King Saul made war against
them and David conquered them (1.Sam 14:47; 2 Sam 8:14). They took refuge
in Egypt and returned after David’s death (1 Kgs. 11:27-22). They were
again overthrown by Israel (2 Chr. 20:22,23) but finally aided Babylon
against Judah (Ps. 137:7; Obad. 1:11) God pronounced special judgment
against Edom (Ezek 35) [The reason being that Esau had lived
there: Genesis 36:8-9 Thus dwelt
Esau in mount Seir: Esau is Edom. And these are the generations of Esau the
father of the Edomites in mount Seir:]
Ezekiel
35:1-15 Moreover the word of the
LORD came unto me, saying, Son of man, set thy face against mount Seir, and prophesy against
it, And say unto it, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, O mount Seir, I am
against thee, and I will stretch out mine hand against thee, and I will
make thee most desolate. I will lay
thy cities waste, and thou shalt be desolate, and thou shalt know that I am
the LORD. Because thou hast had a perpetual hatred, and hast shed the blood
of the children of Israel by the force of the sword in the time of their
calamity, in the time that their iniquity had an end: Therefore, as I live, saith the Lord
GOD, I will prepare thee unto blood, and blood shall pursue thee: sith thou
hast not hated blood, even blood shall pursue thee. Thus will I make mount
Seir most desolate, and cut off from it him that passeth out and him that
returneth. And I will fill his
mountains with his slain men: in thy hills, and in thy valleys, and in all
thy rivers, shall they fall that are slain with the sword. I will make thee
perpetual desolations, and thy cities shall not return: and ye shall know
that I am the LORD. Because thou hast said, These two nations and these two
countries shall be mine, and we will possess it; whereas the LORD was
there: Therefore, as I live, saith
the Lord GOD, I will even do according to thine anger, and according to
thine envy which thou hast used out of thy hatred against them; and I will
make myself known among them, when I have judged thee. And thou shalt know
that I am the LORD, and that I have heard all thy blasphemies which thou
hast spoken against the mountains of Israel, saying, They are laid
desolate, they are given us to consume.
Thus with your mouth ye have boasted against me, and have multiplied
your words against me: I have heard them.
Thus saith the Lord GOD; When the whole earth rejoiceth, I will make
thee desolate. As thou didst rejoice at the inheritance of the house of
Israel, because it was desolate, so will I do unto thee: thou shalt be
desolate, O mount Seir, and all Idumea, even all of it: and they shall know
that I am the LORD.

Genesis
32:22-32 And he [Jacob] rose up
that night, and took his two wives, and his two womenservants, and his
eleven sons, and passed over the ford Jabbok. And he took them, and sent
them over the brook, and sent over that he had. And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him
until the breaking of the day. And
when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his
thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled
with him. And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will
not let thee go, except thou bless me. And he said unto him, What is thy
name? And he said, Jacob. And he
said, Thy name shall be called no
more Jacob, but Israel: for as a
prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed. And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me,
I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask
after my name? And he blessed him there. And Jacob called the name of the
place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is
preserved. And as he passed over
Penuel the sun rose upon him, and he halted upon his thigh. Therefore the
children of Israel eat not of the sinew which shrank, which is upon the
hollow of the thigh, unto this day: because he touched the hollow of
Jacob's thigh in the sinew that shrank.
Note:
Gen. 32:22-32 The events at the ford Jabbok represent a climactic point in
Jacob’s spiritual growth. He proved
that he could persevere and overcome
without cheating. He saw that his own strength was futile and he humbly
sought help from God. From his salvation at Bethel (see note on Genesis
28:10-22) to this point, Jacob had undergone tremendous spiritual growth.
He was a different man than the one who had supplanted his brother through
deceit. Therefore, God gave to him a new name, Israel (“he who strives with
God.”) Note Gen 28:10-22 God promised Jacob two things: he assured Jacob
that he was the promised carrier of both the see and the covenant of
Abraham, and he assured him of his personal safety and blessing. Jacob
accepted these promises by faith and desired to commune with and to serve
God. Many look upon this passage as the time of Jacob’s conversion.

Genesis
33:11-14 Take, I pray thee, my
blessing that is brought to thee; because God hath dealt graciously with
me, and because I have enough. And he urged him, and he took it. And he said, Let us take our journey,
and let us go, and I will go before thee. And he said unto him, My lord
knoweth that the children are tender, and the flocks and herds with young
are with me: and if men should overdrive them one day, all the flock will
die. Let my lord, I pray thee, pass over before his servant: and I will
lead on softly, according as the cattle that goeth before me and the
children be able to endure, until I

desolation, a reproach, a waste, and a curse; and all the cities thereof
shall be perpetual wastes.
I
have heard a rumour from the LORD, and an ambassador is sent unto the
heathen, saying, Gather ye together, and come against her, and rise up to
the battle. For, lo, I will make thee small among the heathen, and despised
among men. Thy terribleness hath deceived thee, and the pride of thine
heart, O thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, that holdest the
height of the hill: though thou shouldest make thy nest as high as the
eagle, I will bring thee down from thence, saith the LORD. Also Edom shall
be a desolation: every one that goeth by it shall be astonished, and shall
hiss at all the plagues thereof.
As in
the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbour cities thereof, saith
the LORD, no man shall abide there, neither shall a son of man dwell in it.
Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the swelling of Jordan against
the habitation of the strong: but I will suddenly make him run away from
her: and who is a chosen man, that I may appoint over her? for who is like
me? and who will appoint me the time? and who is that shepherd that will
stand before me? Therefore hear the
counsel of the LORD, that he hath taken against Edom; and his purposes,
that he hath purposed against the inhabitants of Teman: Surely the least of
the flock shall draw them out: surely he shall make their habitations
desolate with them. The earth is moved at the noise of their fall, at the
cry the noise thereof was heard in the Red sea. Behold, he shall come up and fly as the eagle, and spread his
wings over Bozrah: and at that day shall the heart of the mighty men of
Edom be as the heart of a woman in her pangs.
Edom Will Be Humbled
Commentary:
“.. The most likely time for this prophecy is during the reign of Jehoram
(ca. 852-841 B.C.) when Jerusalem was plundered by Philistines and Arabians
(2 Chr. 21:16-19) .. The Edomites were a thorn in Israel’s side, though
they enjoyed protection under the Law. .. After Jerusalem’s fall in A.D.
70, the Edomites vanish from history. Some suggest, however, that there will be a future resurgence.
Obadiah
1:1-21 The vision of Obadiah. Thus
saith the Lord GOD concerning Edom; We have heard a rumour from the LORD,
and an ambassador is sent among the heathen, Arise ye, and let us rise up
against her in battle. Behold, I have made thee small among the heathen:
thou art greatly despised. The pride of thine heart hath deceived thee,
thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high;
that saith in his heart, Who shall bring me down to the ground? Though thou
exalt thyself as the eagle, and though thou set thy nest among the stars,
thence will I bring thee down, saith the LORD.
If
thieves came to thee, if robbers by night, (how art thou cut off!) would
they not have stolen till they had enough? if the grapegatherers came to
thee, would they not leave some grapes?
How are the things of Esau searched out! how are his hidden things
sought up! All the men of thy confederacy have brought thee even to the
border: the men that were at peace with thee have deceived thee, and
prevailed against thee; they that eat thy bread have laid a wound under
thee: there is none understanding in him.
Shall
I not in that day, saith the LORD, even destroy the wise men out of Edom,
and understanding out of the mount of Esau? And thy mighty men, O Teman,
shall be dismayed, to the end that every one of the mount of Esau may be
cut off by slaughter. For thy
violence against thy brother Jacob shame shall cover thee, and thou
shalt be cut off for ever. In the day that thou stoodest on the
other side, in the day that the strangers carried away captive his forces,
and foreigners entered into his gates, and cast lots upon Jerusalem, even
thou wast as one of them.
But
thou shouldest not have looked on the day of thy brother in the day that he
became a stranger; neither shouldest thou have rejoiced over the children
of Judah in the day of their destruction; neither shouldest thou have
spoken proudly in the day of distress.
Thou shouldest not have entered into the gate of my people in the
day of their calamity; yea, thou shouldest not have looked on their
affliction in the day of their calamity, nor have laid hands on their
substance in the day of their calamity;
Neither
shouldest thou have stood in the crossway, to cut off those of his that did
escape; neither shouldest thou have delivered up those of his that did
remain in the day of distress. For
the day of the LORD is near upon all the heathen: as thou hast done, it
shall be done unto thee: thy reward shall return upon thine own head. For
as ye have drunk upon my holy mountain, so shall all the heathen drink
continually, yea, they shall drink, and they shall swallow down, and they
shall be as though they had not been.
But upon mount Zion shall be deliverance, and there shall be holiness;
and the house of Jacob shall possess
their possessions.
And
the house of Jacob shall be a fire, and the house of Joseph a flame, and
the house of Esau for stubble, and they shall kindle in them, and
devour them; and there shall not be any remaining of the house of Esau; for
the LORD hath spoken it. And they of the south shall possess the mount
of Esau; and they of the plain the Philistines: and they shall possess the
fields of Ephraim, and the fields of Samaria: and Benjamin shall possess
Gilead. And the captivity of this host of the children of Israel shall
possess that of the Canaanites, even unto Zarephath; and the captivity of
Jerusalem, which is in Sepharad, shall possess the cities of the
south. And saviours shall come up
on mount Zion to judge the mount of Esau; and the kingdom shall be the
LORD'S.

Note:
Obadiah 1:15,16 See note on Zephaniah 1:7 concerning the “Day of the Lord.”
The phrase “Day of the Lord” is one of the primary expressions in the O.T.
that is relevant to eschatological events. It properly refers to any time
the Lord openly intervenes in the affairs of men. This it often can apply
to two separate events in two different time periods. Zephaniah saw the
fall of Jerusalem as “that time” which would occur very soon (v.12), and
therefore used terms such as “at hand” (v.7) and “near” (v.14). Yet, as is
common in OT prophecy, this near intervention of God becomes merged in the
prophet’s vision with
”Day
of the Lord,” God’s ultimate intervention in the affairs of His people. At
that time, He will judge the whole earth (vv.2, 3:8), purge Israel (Zeph.
3:11-13; see note on Ezek. 43:13-27), and then reestablish His people into
their land (3:14-20). The apostate people of Israel and Judah had to be
constantly reminded that the Day of the Lord would a time of judgment, and
for the ungodly, a time of utter darkness (see notes on Jer. 30:3-31:26,
Amos 5:18-20; Thess. 5:2).
The
“sacrifice” mentioned here refers to Christ’s atoning work on the cross of
Calvary. (Heb.10:12); in the phrase “bid his guests,” God is inviting His people to accept this
offering and come into a right relationship with Him (Matt. 10:6; 15:24)
Re:
Edom represents all gentile opposition to God’s people. In Amos, the “Day
of the Lord” is seen as a general reference to a time when Israel’s sin
will be judged (Amos 5:18-20, see note) However it is also presented as a
time for judgment upon the Gentiles. Some would suggest that Israel
understood the “Day of the Lord” to be a day of Deliverance, forgetting
their need to be brought into a right relationship with God. The Book of
Obadiah concludes with the millennial blessing of the people of Israel. At
this time the tables will be turned and Edom’s persecution of Israel will
be returned to them. God says that Israel will devour Edom “like a fire” as
they are judged for the evil that was committed against God’s people (v.18,
of Zech. 12:6). Furthermore, God speaks of a future time when Israel will
actually occupy the full extent of its promised land, and the Edomites will
be removed from the land that they seized from Israel after the Babylonian
Captivity began in 586 B.C.. In verse Ob. 1:21 the word translated “savior”
could better be translated “deliverers” referring to the deliverance of the
land by the restored exiles from the Babylonian Captivity . Also, the term
“judged” used here is the same word used to describe how the judges
governed the people (Judg. 2:16) In other words, the land will be delivered
and ruled. Ultimately, God ruled over His people.

Note:
Mal. 1:1-14 This chapter contains God’s rebuke of Israel. However, before
he begins to reprove them, He affirms His past and present love for Israel.
He uses the comparison of Jacob and Esau, and moves from His choice of
Jacob (v.2) and rejection of Esau, to the current situation of Edom (vv.
3,4). God then turns to the offenses which His people have committed. His
initial focus is on the priests (vv.6-9), animals (vv.7,8,13,14), and
thereby “despising” God and His table (vv. 6,7,12)

Exhortation to Holiness
Hebrews
12:12-24 Wherefore lift up the
hands which hang down, and the feeble knees; And make straight paths for
your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way; but let it
rather be healed. Follow peace with
all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord: Looking diligently
lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness
springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled; Lest there be any fornicator, or profane
person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright.
For
ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he
was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it
carefully with tears. For ye are
not come unto the mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire,
nor unto blackness, and darkness, and tempest, And the sound of a trumpet,
and the voice of words; which voice they that heard intreated that the word
should not be spoken to them any more: (For they could not endure that
which was commanded, And if so much as a beast touch the mountain, it shall
be stoned, or thrust through with a dart: And so terrible was the sight,
that Moses said, I exceedingly fear and quake:)
But
ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the
heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels, To the general
assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to
God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,
And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of
sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel.
